Spider

Spider-Man's alt-costumes don't usually last long in comics, with a one-and-done 90s armored design getting a cosplay treatment that fans need to see!

In Marvel Comics, Spider-Man has more than a few costumes to choose from when swinging around the streets of New York City, with his 90s Spider-Armor MK1 being a design that not only kept Spidey safe from the super-powered criminals throwing everything at him including the kitchen sink but became a sort of fan-favorite look in the years since. And now, in a brilliant cosplay recreating this suit, Spider-Man’s armored outfit perfectly makes the transition into the real world in all of its silvery shiny glory!

Posted on Instagram by James Davis (@ryrostudios), this talented creator has a 3D design company that focuses on “design, programming, printing, and painting,” all contributing to the creation of some truly stellar cosplay work that needs to be seen to be believed.

Wearing costumes of other iconic heroes like Spider-Man 2099, Black Panther, and even a terrifying Zombie Iron Man suit, James also spends his time creating custom commissions for his followers, making sure to bring the same level of quality to these pieces as he does to his own designs, with this Spider-Armor being no exception.

Making its debut in 1993’s Web of Spider-Man #100, by Terry Kavanagh and Alex Savilik, Peter Parker created this Spider-Armor after being on the receiving end of a particularly bad beatdown from Spider-Man’s New Enforcers team of villains. Effectively making Spidey bulletproof while also allowing him to withstand most other super-powered attacks (though it slowed him down considerably), the MK1 armor only lasted until the end of the issue when it was destroyed after absorbing more damage than Peter would have been able to survive had he not been wearing it.

Regardless of its short tenure as wearable apparel, James, in collaboration with a few other creative talents helping to make this armored look come to life, absolutely nails this one-and-done costume design that hasn’t been seen in comics in decades. Giving his followers two short clips that show off his comic-accurate and professionally made MK1 design, James turns and moves with a surprisingly wide range of motion, drawing attention to the reflective shoulder pads, back pads, chest piece, and, of course, shiny Spidey helmet. Also wearing a silver body suit underneath the armor to complete the look and fill in any gaps the plating doesn't cover, and James makes sure to note that this is only the beginning of him sharing his newest design with the masses, with more photos and videos promised in the future.

So while it’s a bit of a bummer that Spider-Man’s MK1 armor hasn’t been seen all that often in comics, fans of the design can thank James Davis (@ryrostudios) and fellow artists for creating a great live-action look that Marvel needs to take note of. At the end of the day, Spidey will always revert to his original blue and red suit, but returning to Spider-Man’s 90s costume heyday is always a welcome development in the nerd community, especially in cosplay form!

Brian is first and foremost a nerd in every way shape and form. He likes to compare himself to a black hole, consuming any and every form of entertainment unlucky enough to get caught in his gravitational pull. It's not uncommon on any given day for him to read a couple comics, settle down with a good book, watch a few movies (inside and out of the theater), catch up on his ever growing but never depleting streaming queue, challenge himself with a few good video games, and of course, write his heart out. He spends every waking moment dreaming up interesting and intriguing concepts and ideas that will hopefully one day inspire and entertain anyone looking for an escape from their daily lives. Graduating from Full Sail University in good old humid Florida, Brian currently lives and works in New York City and lives for the day when all he has to do is wake up and create something unique and new for people to enjoy.
